It is exhausting to go through these pains. The hatred and mistrust that is rooting in our society is alarming.

Change for worse or good?

Change is vital as long as we live. Even inevitable. As human beings it is part of our inner desire that we seek and experience change. But is it really a paradigm shift in our society or something deeper that is unknowingly decaying our value system? Continue reading »

Arguably the most notable changes that took place in the Maldivian labour industry by far is the new legislation that came into force during the last month.  However, the mood is somewhat different among thousands of tourism sector employees.

In the leisure industry, the new born ”Labour law” has become one of the most un/popular topics in recent times. Why is it and how much it means for thousands of Maldivians employed in the biggest industry of the Maldives.

Many employees in the tourism sector express their unhappiness in various forms claiming that they are deprived from certain rights when the new legislation is ultimately gazetted. These claims mainly address the specifics in Art.32 concerning the maximum weekly working hours Continue reading »

Most sports and games help unite people, work against famine and mistrust, narrow political and racial devides amond individuals and nations. Football is not just a game but a  way to remind man that there is more within us if we dig deeper.

The recent SAFF championship in Male’ is such an event that will engrave fond memories in our hearts. Our national team’s eager to fight attitude, win and celebrate infront of our home fans, is something that will evolve in our hearts and minds for the years to come. Compliments to our national team for their hard work, courage and professionalism. This is a moment that will unite us. Man, women, children and the whole nation is celebrating. These are people whom we are proud of. National heroes.

If we think it deeper, this game is reminding our fellow citizen that we are one family, one race and we know what it takes to be a fine citizen. We love peace, and we hold on with our values although we continuously fight for our rights and freedom. This is what our forefathers have tought to us. This is what our history is all about. The colors of true Patriotism in our own way.

Saudi Kingdom announced new and diversed projects that will send shockwaves in the highly geared construction industry in certain Midle Easten countries. Saudi leadership calls it a “reawakening of the culture” as opposed to the “opening up” of the Kingdom as per certain newspapers.  It seems that the focus will be on the music, color and food of the country while developing the kingdom’s leisure industry. At least seven cities are being built from scratch, airports are being upgraded and expanded, 15 signature events are under development, new tour operators are being licensed, and much of the demand will be generated within the region. An airport city is being built in Jeddah with Riyadh next in line Continue reading »

“…Established hotels are launching new brands to cater to emerging trends in the industry, such as traveler’s increased interest in environmentally-friendly hotels and so-called stylish “lifestyle” lodgings, which feature amenities that blur the lines between work and leisure.” Forbes 2008

According to Michael Fishbin, Ernst & Young’s U.S. Director of Hospitality and Leisure, the popular US hotel brands who are certain to further strengthen their efforts to go stylish includes; Hilton Hotels, Marriott, Starwood, InterContinental, Fairmont, The Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental.

The “life style” concept in leisure and hospitality industry is an emerging trend and giants in the field dare to grab their stakes in the market. Sheraton Universal’s Hollywood makeover is on the news for it’s high end luxury.

Junior Suite Living AreaThe revitalized hotel will salute Hollywood’s heyday and feature elements in the Hollywood Regency style inspired by the 1920s through the 1940s. Guestrooms, designed by Beth Mondello of ESM Interiors, feature Art Deco design complete with dark wood paneling and a color palette of brown, blue and ivory. The new rooftop space and lobby bar, designed by hospitality design shop Intra-Spec, highlights Hollywood’s glamour with semi-private cabanas in the lobby bar and a black and blue themed backdrop beneath a starry sky ceiling in the rooftop space.” hotels mag 2008.

The term “Human Resources” is often refered to illustrate the human input in a business. It could literally be refered to the act of man to build and civilise the universe with the talent god has bestowed.

“…Human resources is a term with which many organizations describe the combination of traditionally administrative personnel functions with performance management, Employee Relations and resource planning” (Wikipedia). The concept seems to be derived from the Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Contemporary analysis emphasizes that human beings are not “commodities” or “resources”, but are creative and social beings that make class contributions beyond ‘labor’ to a society and to civilization. The broad term “human capital” has evolved to contain some of this complexity, and in micro-economics the term “firm-specific human capital” has come to represent a meaning of the term “human resources”. Wikipedia.

Various literature is found in the field of human resources and it is one of the most talked about areas in academic debates and in businesses. It is a term that represents staff in businesses. And if you think about it deeply, you will hear a lot about the importance of developing a sound human resource for businesses to flourish or to succeed.

Think about it . . . if a business is to suffer for any reason, this ill-fated resource is first to be ignored, binned or cruelly treated. And than we hear layoffs, redundancies and notice chits. Imagine a company using the term “over-staffed” in a particular situation when they realize the business is staffed more than required. But if you think deeply, is it really the consequences of overly staffed or poor allocation of the resource itself. We never hear people talking about, things like more than required land resources, natural resources such as coal, petroleum, agriculture or livestock. Firms, corporations and countries fight for them, risk the ties for the sake of dominating them.

Considering the very nature of the term “human resources”, to me, it is often a term that is hijacked by businesses to gain their desired dividends with a mass usage of man in whatever way possible. Some keep a reasonable balance, few understand and treat human as a necessary resource and many just use the term and fail to treat it as an essential resource.   ends.

Literally, ‘Kaizan‘ illustrates, ‘Change for the better’ or ‘improvement’. In management terms this word is often referred for workplace quality improvement strategies that reduce waste and create a “quality-centric” approach in achieving desired results. This philosophy is inspired by a total devotion of maintaining an ongoing improvement strategy. Kaizan is practiced among various cultures, different levels of successful organizations, in personal development programs, and virtually every aspect of human life if improvement is considered a basis for great achievements.

Kaizan is believed to be derived from a Japanese philosophy which was initiated with an all-out improvement program in 1950s. Japanese created an image that reflects to high reputation where even a same brand if produced in two different nations, most prefer to own Japanese manufactures. Research has proven that quality prevails over the rest thus with Kaizan philosophy, Japanese manufactures determined to create the “quality” image that has greatly benefited the whole nation especially after a war devastated nation in early 1950s Continue reading »
